Weeks MO. International Journal of Nursing Practice 2011; 17: 534-538 Tobacco and media exposure in poor neighbourhoods: Implications for the incidence of smoking among community residents It is an accepted truth that tobacco, as well as second-hand smoke, causes lung and other cancers. This health policy fact sheet examines the need and implications for tobacco control legislation in the United States. Major stakeholders and special interest groups influence whether or not further tobacco control legislation can be passed and who it affects. This paper will review not only the ethical implications, such as the ethical theory, ethical principles and ethical rules of conduct that support tobacco control legislation, but also its legal and economic implications as well as media influences. This paper concludes with the authors' assessment that the United States is in fact in need of more tobacco control legislation.

It is known that daily smoking is associated with the development of alcohol use disorders. However, non-daily smoking is prevalent in young adults and is associated with increased rates of problematic alcohol use in cross-sectional data. It is unknown whether non-daily smoking is predictive of hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorders using longitudinal data. The primary aim of the present investigation was to explore the temporal relationship between non-daily smoking and drinking in young adults, and secondarily, whether college status modified this relationship.

Menthol cigarettes may cause people to smoke more and heighten addiction rates, a new study from Yale and the University of Connecticut shows.
The study, which was published online in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, found that mice became desensitized to the experience of smoking with the addition of menthol additives, in addition to demonstrating higher propensities for addiction. The team’s findings contest recent research produced with the support of tobacco companies, which have long played down the effects of menthol in cigarettes, at a time when the Food and Drug Administration is considering imposing a ban of the additive.

Researchers analyzed 8 clinical trials that examined abstinence from smoking for a total of 3,290 pregnant women at 6 months after counseling. Six-month abstinence rates varied from 4% to 24% among counseled women and from 2% to 21% among uncounseled controls. The absolute difference in abstinence between the intervention and control groups was 4% or less in all trials. Four of the 8 trials showed no difference in abstinence rates between women who did and didn’t receive counseling. The type of counseling didn’t affect efficacy.

Tobacco use continues to be the leading global cause of preventable death. It kills nearly 6 million people and causes hundreds of billions of dollars of economic damage worldwide each year. Most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income
countries, and this disparity is expected to widen further over the next several
decades. If current trends continue, by 2030 tobacco will kill more than 8 million people worldwide each year, with 80% of these premature deaths among people living in low- and middle-income countries. Over the course of the 21st century, tobacco use could kill a billion people or more unless urgent action is taken.
