Counseling alone doesn’t significantly affect quit rates among pregnant women, according to a meta-analysis of randomized, controlled clinical trials.
Researchers analyzed 8 clinical trials that examined abstinence from smoking for a total of 3,290 pregnant women at 6 months after counseling. Six-month abstinence rates varied from 4% to 24% among counseled women and from 2% to 21% among uncounseled controls. The absolute difference in abstinence between the intervention and control groups was 4% or less in all trials. Four of the 8 trials showed no difference in abstinence rates between women who did and didn’t receive counseling. The type of counseling didn’t affect efficacy.
