Fathers-to-be should stop smoking to protect their unborn child from the risk of stillbirth or birth defects, scientists say. UK expert said it was "vital" women knew the risks of second-hand smoke. University of Nottingham researchers found that pregnant women exposed to smoke at work or home increased their risk of stillbirth by 23 percent and of having a baby with defects by 13 percent. They looked at 19 previous studies carried out in North America, South America, Asia and Europe.

Door het stoppen met Postbus-51 campagnes tegen roken en het niet langer vergoeden van ondersteunende medicijnen bij stoppen met roken, zullen er zeshonderd mensen extra overlijden aan de gevolgen van roken. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van de Universiteit van Maastricht en Stivoro naar de gevolgen van het beleid van minister Edith Schippers van Volksgezondheid. De resultaten van deze SimSmoke-studie worden gemeld in de ‘ZEMBLA’-aflevering ‘Minister van Tabak’, vrijdag 21 oktober om 21.20 uur op Nederland 2.

The diagnosis of cancer can motivate patients to reduce smoking, but few quit altogether and a smaller number increase or even take up smoking. These changes occur early after receiving a diagnosis of cancer. Patients with a smoking history believed that the treating radiation oncologist should discuss smoking cessation with their patients and that the ideal timing is at the first consultation. The periodic nature of treatments and consultations at radiation oncology centres suggest there is the potential for an effective smoking cessation programme.

De Nederlandse antirookmaatregelen zorgden in 1996-2010 voor een daling in het aantal rokers van 16%. Bovendien voorkwam dit beleid 7078 sterfgevallen. Met een pakket fikse maatregelen kan het echter nog veel beter, zo blijkt uit een studie in Addiction (2011; epub 26 september).

African Americans, Hispanics, service and blue-collar workers, and residents of rural areas are among those facing higher rates of workplace secondhand smoke exposure in states without smokefree workplace laws. Consequently, these groups also experience more negative health effects resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. The objective of this study was to examine disparities in workplace secondhand smoke exposure in a state without a comprehensive statewide smokefree workplace law and to use this information in considering a statewide law.

U.S. health regulators said on Thursday they will follow the behavior and health of 40,000 smokers aged 12 and older to study the effects of new tobacco regulations.

Een sigaretje roken in de baas z'n tijd; in Nederland kan het nog. Maar volgens de Stichting Volksgezondheid en Roken (Stivoro) duurt dit niet lang meer. Bedrijven willen af van de speciale positie van rokers. Bovendien ergeren niet-rokende werknemers zich aan de regelmatige afwezigheid van rokende collega's. Moet de paffer straks aan de prikklok? Of 'poldert' ons land zich ook wel weer door dit probleem?
